12th century – The first garments with a hood
The word “hood” derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “höd” which has the same root as the word “hat.”
The garment’s style and form can be traced back to Medieval Europe when monks wear tunics or ropes (known as cowl) and workers wore hooded capes (known as chaperons). It is believed that the short cape (or “capa”) was imported to England in the 12th Century during the Norman Conquest, as the cape was particularly common in Normandy.
1930s – The fisrt hooded sweatshirt
The first hoodie sweatshirt was first produced by a US champion company for laborers working in freezing temperatures in upstate New York in order to keep them warm.
1970s – 1980s Hooded sweatshirts in fashion and at universities
The hoodie became popular this time with several factors contributing to its success. Hoodies were adopted by hip-hop culture, also Norma Kamali and other designers embraced and glamorized the new clothing. Furthermore, the rise of hoodies with university logos began around this time.
1976 – Iconic appearance in the Rocky film
Most critical to the hoodie’s popularity during this time was the iconic appearance in the blockbuster Rocky film. Rocky is a 1976 American boxing drama film with Sylvester Stallone as a leading actor.
1990s – The term hoodie entered popular usage in the 1990s
The term “hoodie” was first used during the 1990s. By that time hoodies had evolved into a symbol of isolation. It had gained a negative image associated with trouble-making, intimidating teens, and anti-social behavior.
In May 2005, Bluewater shopping center in Kent caused outrage by launching a code of conduct that bans its shoppers from sporting hoodies or baseball caps, although the garments remain on sale.
Nowadays
Nowadays hoodies are a popular clothing item sometimes worn under a coat or jacket to provide an extra layer of clothing during the winter.
